The College of Idaho got their second win of the season, defeating Park-Gilbert 7-5. The Coyotes led all the way. Ben Gaff got it started with an RBI double in the top of the third inning, and Jace Mahlke scored when Alex McFarland-Smith reached on a fielder’s choice. They went up 3-0 when Kris Kirkpatrick scored on a ground out by Chandler Stocking. The Buccaneers got as close as 3-2 with single runs in the fifth and sixth. McFarland-Smith hit an RBI single in the seventh, then Kirkpatrick hit a two-RBI single for the winning run. The Buccanneers got three runs in the bottom of the eighth, and the Coyotes completed the scoring with an RBI single by Stocking in the top of the ninth. Kirkpatrick finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Jacob Lewis got the win in relief. He pitched three innings, allowed two runs on three hits, struck out four. Willy Shirts got the last five outs; he entered the game with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and the bases loaded. Eastern Oregon started the afternoon with a continuation of a game at Simpson, halted by rain with one out in the seventh inning the previous day. At that point, the Mountaineers trailed 2-1, the result of an excellent start by Brock Cordes; he went six innings, allowed zero earned runs on three hits, struck out seven, and walked two. The Mountaineers got their run on an RBI double by Joey Freitas. When play resumed on Sunday, Tucker Zander got the ball, and the Red Hawks immediately scored an unearned run, going up 3-1. The Mountaineers got a run in the top of the eighth on a ground out by Mario Landeros, but the Red Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to win it. The Mountaineers got on more run in the top of the ninth when Greyson McDaniel scored on an error and Benat Van Hoose scored on a wild pitch, making the final score 7-4. Freitas finished 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
The Mountaineers won the next game 11-8. They led 7-5 after 5 1/2 innings, and the runs included a two-RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Chase Nett, and a two-RBI single by Matthew Carlson. The Red Hawks tied it with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Mountaineers took the lead again in the top of the seventh with an RBI triple by Greyson McDaniel. The Red Hawks answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and the Mountaineers trailed 8-7 going into the eighth inning. The Mountaineers tied it in the top of the eighth when pinch-hitter Tyler Balkenbush scored on a wild pitch. The next batter, Mario Landeros, hit a two-RBI single for the winning run. McDaniel added another insurance run with a sacrifice fly. Then, Jake Herrera shut down the Red Hawks the rest of the way; he didn’t allow a hit, and struck out four of the six batters he faced.
The Mountaineers were out-hit 12-6. Jeter Larson got the win, but only faced three batters. Herrera got a well-deserved save. recap
