#7 Oregon State 15, New Mexico 6
The No. 7 Oregon State Beavers came out with their bats on fire to begin their season with a resounding 15-6 win over New Mexico, tying a program record with seven home runs. The offensive barrage was spread across six different Beavers, showcasing their depth and power.
Freshman Tyce Peterson led the charge with two homers in his collegiate debut, while Trent Caraway also went deep in his first game for Oregon State. Other Beaver standouts included Jacob Krieg, Travis Bazzana, Micah McDowell, and Tanner Smith, who all contributed long balls to the offensive explosion.
The pitching wasn’t overshadowed either, with Aiden May earning the win in his first Beaver start. He tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run and scattering four hits.
This dominant opening day victory continues Oregon State’s impressive tradition, marking their 83rd season-opening win in school history.
Oregon 4, Oklahoma 2
The Oregon Ducks kicked off their 2024 season with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Oklahoma in Texas. Strong pitching, led by RJ Gordon’s return from injury, and opportunistic offense fueled the win.
Gordon, allowing two runs in his 4 1/3 innings while striking out 3, set the tone. Grayson Grinsell and Michael Freund shut the door from there, allowing just one hit combined over the final 4 2/3 frames.
Oregon jumped ahead early with runs in the first and third, with Dominic Hellman and Justin Cassella driving in runs. Oklahoma tied the game in the third, but the Ducks responded with two more in the eighth. Jacob Walsh singled and later scored on a double play, followed by Justin Cassella scampering home on another wild pitch.
Washington State 12, Utah Tech 6
The Washington State Cougars launched their season with a resounding 12-6 victory over Utah Tech, powered by a five-run sixth inning and a barrage of 18 hits.
New head coach Nathan Choate notched his debut win thanks in part to a near-cycle performance from Cole Cramer, who blasted a homer, drove in five runs, and fell just a single shy of completing the feat. Three Cougars homered in total, including Jacob Morrow and Casen Taggart, as WSU secured their fifth straight season-opening win.
Starting pitcher Grant Taylor earned the win, striking out five in five innings, while relievers Andrew Baughn and Rylan Haider shut the door on Utah Tech.
Game 1: Seattle U 7, UC Davis 6
In a back-and-forth battle, Seattle U pulled off a dramatic 7-6 victory over UC Davis thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 8th inning.
Seattle U struck first with a run in the 1st on a double by Gellos, but UC Davis answered back with runs in the 2nd and 4th, highlighted by Nick Leehey’s solo homer and Damian Stone’s 2-RBI single.
The Redhawks battled back, tying the game 5-5 in the 6th on RBIs from Cam Dayton and Cole Kleckner. UC Davis regained the lead with a sacrifice grounder by Wright, but Seattle U tied it again in the 7th on errors by the right fielder. SU regained the lead in the 8th after Trevor Antonson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home, what turned out to be, the game-winning run.
Derek Gellos had a strong day at the plate with 3 RBIs, while Cole Kleckner added an RBI and three runs scored.
