It was scoreless for six innings, and Beacon starter Nate Rasmussen (Transfer from Bellevue College) pitched 5 2/3 hitless innings, struck out three. Saints starter Justice Yamashita went six innings, scattered five hits, struck out five. He was replaced by Sam McCauley, who hit the first batter he faced, made a throwing error on a bunt by the next batter, then gave up a two-RBI single by Reece Carganilla, which gave the Beacons all the runs they needed. They got three more runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Cade Crist and a two-run home run by Brandon Reed. First game: Eastern Oregon 8, Western Oregon 7. The vastly improved Mountaineers started off the top of the second inning with a triple by Trevor Baker. He came home on a double by Tommy Whiles. Whiles scored on a single by Youhyeon Choi. The Mountaineers loaded the bases with a hit batter and a walk, and Joey Freitas hit a two-RBI single to give the Mountaineers a 4-0 lead. The Wolves got one back in the bottom of the second, and two more in the third on a two-RBI single by Tyler Mohler. The Mountaineers got three more in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Chase Nett and a two-RBI single by Mario Landeros. That gave the Mountaineers a 7-3 lead. They added one more with a home run by Landeros in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-3.
The Mountaineers needed every one of those eight runs. The Wolves made it 8-4 with a sacrifice fly by Owen Bischoff in the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Rebson, who took the mound in the fourth inning and allowed only one earned run on six hits, was relieved by Logan Valtierra after giving up a single by A.J. Cortese. Valtierra walked the only batter he faced on four pitches, and was replaced by Zakaia Michaels. He walked the first batter he faced, then the Wolves got their first run of the inning when Bischoff reached first on a fielder’s choice. Bischoff went to second on a wild pitch, and the Wolves had runners at second and third. They both scored on a single by Emiliano Alarcon, and it was a one-run game. However, Alarcon tried to go to second during a relay from right field to second to the plate. The catcher, Matthew Carlson, just missed a tag on Bischoff, but he made a throw to the shortstop, who tagged out Alarcon. So, instead of the tying run in scoring position with one out, it was bases empty with two outs. The next batter, Zach Valdez, reached second on an error, so the Wolves again had the tying run in scoring position. However, Michaels got a fly out to end the game.
Rebsom got the win, and Arturo Alvarez got the loss. Landeros finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Collin Irwin finished 3-for-6 with a double for the Wolves.
Second game: Western Oregon 13, Eastern Oregon 1. The Wolves got the winning run in the bottom of the second inning, when Zach Valdez drew a bases-loaded walk. The next batter, Collin Irwin, hit a two-RBI double, and the batter after him, Emiliano Alarcon, hit a two-RBI single, and the Wolves led 6-0. They made it 7-0 with a home run by Justyn Herzog in the next inning. The Mountaineers got their only run of the game on a home run by Chase Nett in the fourth inning. The Wolves completed the scoring with six runs in the fifth inning, three of them on a home run by Owen Bischoff, and one more on Herzog’s second home run of the game.
Wolves starter Jacob Memmot got the win; he pitched six innings, allowed the only run on two hits, struck out six. Devin Bell pitched the seventh and final inning, struck out two of the three batters he faced. Irwin went 3-for-3 with the double and two RBI. Tyler Harper got the loss.
