First game: Whitworth 7, Eastern Oregon 2. The Pirates got the winning run with an RBI single by Ty Quiggle in the fourth inning, then added four runs on the fifth inning with a two-RBI single by Kevin Corder, a run scored on a throwing error, and an RBI single by Henry Zaske. The Mountaineers got both of their runs in the early going with an RBI double by Joey Freitas and a home run by Tommy Whiles, but they were shut down over the final five innings by relievers Hunter Williams and Dylan Huntsman. Williams, who got the win, allowed two hits, struck out three. Huntsman allowed only one hit, struck out two.
Spencer Shipman finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored for the Pirates. Youhyeon Choi went 2-for-3 for the Mountaineers. Starter Shane Sinclair got the loss.
Second game: Eastern Oregon 7, Whitworth 2. The Mountaineers got eight innings from their starter, Will Seslar (transfer from UC Riverside), to give the Pirates their first loss of the season after eleven wins. Seslar allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out eight, threw 112 pitches. Callan Vreim closed with a hitless ninth inning.
Joey Freitas also had a big game for the Mountaineers; 3-for-5 with five RBI, and all three hits were home runs. Mario Landeros also finished 3-for-5, with a double and an RBI.
Landeros opened the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first. The Pirates answered with an RBI on a ground out by Kevin Corder. The Mountaineers went up 2-1 in the top of the third with the first of Freitas’ home runs, and the Pirates tied it again when Corder scored when Henry Zaske reached on a fielder’s choice. That was the last time the Pirates scored, however, and the Mountaineers got the winning run in the top of the fifth with a home run by Parker Cumberland.
Corder finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Pirates. Quentin O’Connor, who pitched the first 5 1/3 innings, and allowed three runs on five hits, struck out five, and walked four, got the loss. recap
