Cascade Collegiate Conference recap for March 17

Oregon Tech swept British Columbia, and both games were bottom of the ninth walk-offs. Bushnell swept Eastern Oregon.

Logan Macy

First game: Oregon Tech 9, British Columbia 8. Logan Macy, a freshman playing his very first game for the Hustlin’ Owls, hit a double in his first at-bat in the second inning. Seven innings later, he came up to bat with one out and Ka’ala Tam on third base. Tam had just hit a triple that scored a run and tied the game 8-8. Macy hit a line drive to left field that was caught. Tam came home for the winning run just ahead of the throw.

The Thunderbirds led 5-2 after scoring four runs in the fourth inning, on a home run by Kyle Yip, a two-RBI double by Aaron Marsh, and a sacrifice fly by Trent Lenihan. They extended their lead to 7-3 with an RBI double by Kenny Scott and an RBI on a ground out by Jackson Boomer. The Owls responded with an RBI single by Julien Jones, who scored on a balk after Keanu Mizuta scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth, and the Thunderbirds’ lead was cut to 7-6. The Owls tied it the next inning on an RBI on a ground out by Kyle Norton. The Thunderbirds took an 8-7 lead into the ninth inning with an RBI on a ground out by David Draayers.

Landon Cheney got the win; he pitched the sixth through ninth innings, allowed one run on one hit, struck out one. Vicarte Domingo, who entered the game with two out in the eighth inning, got the loss. Patrick Barry finished 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Owls. Lenihan finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Thunderbirds.

Second game: Oregon Tech 1, British Columbia 0. Both starters, Cody Dubray for the Hustlin’ Owls and Ryan Beitel for the Thunderbirds, pitched gems. Dubray’s numbers were six innings pitched, two hits, nine strikeouts. Beitel went 7 2/3 innings, allowed six hits, struck out four, walked five, threw 102 pitches. The Owls left the bases loaded in the first and second innings. Beitel was relieved by Tyson Kilbreath after walking a batter with two out in the bottom of the eighth, and Kilbreath got a fly out to send the game into the ninth inning scoreless. The Owls moved Riley Cronin from DH to the mound, and he pitched a perfect top of the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Matthew Ortiz opened the bottom of the ninth with a single, and Kilbreath struck out the next batter. Tyler Horner hit a single, and he and Ortiz moved to second and third on a wild pitch. The next batter, Julien Jones, was intentionally walked. Kilbreath struck out the next batter, Ka’ala Tam. However, the Owls didn’t leave the bases loaded a third time. Alonzo Vergara hit a single to left field to win it.

The Owls out-hit the Thunderbirds 9-3. Horner finished 3-for-5 with a triple.
