Cascade Collegiate Conference recap for March 23

Oregon Tech swept College of Idaho, Lewis-Clark State swept Eastern Oregon, British Columbia swept Corban, and Bushnell lost at Utah Valley.

At Orem, Utah. Utah Valley 6, Bushnell 5. The Division I Wolverines completed the three-game sweep of the Beacons by scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, on a two-RBI single by Garrett Broussard, and an RBI double by Calyn Halvorson. The Beacons had led all the way up to that point. They scored two runs with a hit batter and a sacrifice fly by Reece Carganilla in the top of the second inning. The Wolverines got on the board with an RBI double by Burke Camper in the bottom of the third inning. The Beacons ran their lead to 5-1 in the top of the seventh with an RBI double by Isaiah Hart and a two-RBI single by Jordan Wilson. The Wolverine comeback began in the bottom of the seventh with a home run by Camper and an RBI single by Luke Iverson.

Gray Bailey and Jacob Beltran held the Beacons hitless for the final 2 1/3 innings. Bailey got a win, and Beltran got a save. Daniel Dickinson, Broussard, Camper, and Halvorson all finished 2-for-4 for the Wolverines. Albert Jennings finished 3-for-5 with a double for the Beacons. recap

At Caldwell, ID. First game: Oregon Tech 3, College of Idaho 2. A game about as even as you can get. The Hustlin’ Owls got two unearned runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Matthew Ortiz, who then scored on a dropped third strike. The Coyotes tied it in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI single by Darren Smith. The game stayed tied until the top of the eighth inning, when Keanu Mizuta hit an RBI single. The bottom of the eighth ended with Kris Kirkpatrick being thrown out at home after getting to third on an error. The Coyotes had a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth with only one out, but a ground out and a strikeout ended the game.

The pitching matchup was Patrick Arman for the Owls, and Nick Eliason for the Coyotes. They both allowed nine hits. Eliason went eight innings, allowed only one earned run, struck out seven, threw 125 pitches. Arman went seven innings, allowed two runs, struck out seven. Tim Williams pitched the final two innings for the Owls, allowed one hit, struck out three of the eight batters he faced. Mizuta finished 2-for-4. Kirkpatrick finished 3-for-3.

Second game: Oregon Tech 8, College of Idaho 3. The Hustlin’ Owls got a run in the top of the first with an RBI single by Keanu Mizuta, then got all the runs they needed in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly by Alonzo Vergara. An RBI single by Matthew Ortiz, an RBI single by Kyle Norton (the winning run), and an RBI on a ground out by Tyler Horner. Three of those runs were unearned. Bronson Chapple started for the Owls, pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowed one run on four hits, struck out seven. Ortiz finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Mountaineer starter Nate Vidlak pitched seven innings, got the loss.

At Lewiston, ID. First game: Lewis-Clark State 13, Eastern Oregon 9. The Warriors led all the way, although the Mountaineers were as close as 9-8 at the seventh inning stretch. Although the Mountaineers committed five errors to three for the Warriors, the Mountaineers got seven unearned runs, and the Warriors two. The Warriors got a RBI single by Nick Seamons in the bottom of the seventh to take a 10-8 lead. The Mountaineers got an RBI single by Mario Landeros in the top of the eighth to get as close as 10-9, but left the bases loaded. The Warriors finally pulled away with an RBI double by Noah Weintraub, an RBI single by Pu’ukani De Sa, and an RBI single by Seamons. Carter Booth finished 4-for-4 with a triple, a double, and an RBI. Dominic Signorelli hit a home run. Landeros finished 3-for-5 with three RBI. Hiroyuki Yamada got the win, Shane Sinclair got the loss.

Second game: Lewis-Clark State 6, Eastern Oregon 3. This game was tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the sixth innings, when the Warriors put it away with four runs, on RBI singles by Jakob Marquez, Nick Seamons, a run on a wild pitch, and an RBI double by Jake Gish. Tucker Grote got the win, pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowed zero hits and struck out two. Tyler Rebsom got the loss. Seamons finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

The Warriors swept the four-game series.

At Vancouver, BC. First game: British Columbia 22, Corban 0. Mercy-ruled after seven innings. The Thunderbirds got ten runs in the first inning. Will Anderson, Oliver Duthie, and Lucas Huynh combined for the shutout. Anderson pitched five innings, allowed all four of the Warriors’ hits, struck out five. This was first-year student Huynh’s first appearance of the season. Kaden Zarowny finished 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Aaron Marsh and Jonny McGill hit home runs.

Second game: British Columbia 16, Corban 0. Mercy-ruled after seven innings. The Thunderbirds got it started with two runs in the bottom of the second, with RBI on ground outs by Aidan Rose and David Draayers. They didn’t take it into mercy rule territory until they scored ten runs in the sixth, led by a grand slam home run by Kaden Zarowny. Sean Heppner went the distance, allowed three hits, struck out nine. Trent Lenihan hit a three-run home run, and Russell Young hit a solo home run.
