Cascade Collegiate Conference recap for April 5

Lewis-Clark State defeated College of Idaho with a walk-off bases-leaded walk, and Corban and Eastern Oregon split.

At Keizer, OR. First game: Corban 16, Eastern Oregon 3. Halted by the mercy rule after seven innings. Nathaniel Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with a double, five RBI, and three runs scored. Meanwhile, Warrior starter Avery Williamson pitched six innings, allowed only two hits, struck out four, and, uh, walked eight. He held the Mountaineers scoreless until the sixth inning. The Warriors got the winning run in the third inning on a ground out by Gutierrez. Brad Pellkofer hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Mountaineer starter Brock Cordes gave up ten runs over four innings, got the loss.

Youhyeon Choi

Second game: Eastern Oregon 3, Corban 2. The Mountaineers got a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Trevor Baker, and got their remaining runs in the fifth; Youhyeon Choi hit an RBI triple, then scored the winning run on a passed ball. Both of the Warriors’ runs came in the bottom of the fifth on RBI doubles by Brady Majewski and Ryan Clay. However, Mountaineer reliever Alex Farnsworth allowed only one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings. The Warriors had a runner on third in the seventh inning, but lost an out when Farnsworth picked off a runner as soon as he took the mound. Farnsworth picked off another runner in the eighth inning.

The Warriors actually out-hit the Mountaineers 6-4. Warrior starter Aidan Bray pitched seven innings, allowed those four hits, struck out four. Reliever Nathan Finley pitched the final two innings, retired all six batters he faced. Mountaineer starter Will Seslar got the win. At Lewiston, OR. Lewis-Clark State 8, College of Idaho 7. Jack Sheward drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Coyote reliever Jackson Cummins started the inning with a strikeout, then walked Nick Seamons. He went to second on a wild pitch. Cummins then struck out Dominic Signorelli for the second out of the inning. He walked Brandon Cabrera, then hit Charlie Updegrave to load the bases. Sheward worked the count to full, then fouled off several pitches before Cummings threw ball four to end the game.

The Warriors got an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first, led by a two-RBI double by Updegrave. The Coyotes answered with five runs in the top of the second, including a three-run home run by Jordan Kelly. That chased Warrior starter Drake George, who was relieved by Jatzen Lucas. The Warriors tied it 5-5 with a sacrifice fly by Signorelli in the bottom of the second, then took a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run home run by Signorelli. The Coyotes tied it 7-7 in the top of the seventh with an RBI single by Kelly and a run scored on a passed ball after a strikeout. Neither team threatened in the eighth inning or the top of the ninth, setting up the dramatic finish.

Cameron Smith took the mound with no outs in the top of the seventh after Lucas gave up a single, threw two wild pitches, and walked a batter. The two runs the Coyotes scored were charged to Lucas. Smith allowed three hits, struck out four, got the win. Seamons finished 4-for-4 with three doubles and four runs scored. Signorelli finished 2-for-4 with four RBI.
