NAIA Opening Round, first day

Lewis-Clark State got a win, British Columbia got a win and a loss, and Bushnell got a loss.

At Lawrenceville, GA. Louisiana Christian 6, Bushnell 4. The Beacons managed only seven hits. The Wildcats (of Pineville, LA) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-RBI single by Adrian Aguilar and another two-RBI single by Braxton Cooksey. The Beacons got one back in the bottom of the second on a ground out by Reece Carganilla. The Wildcats got the winning run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Luke Morgan, and the insurance run on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Lorio. The rest of the scoring was an RBI double by Albert Jennings in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI single by Carganilla, and a home run by Jordan Wilson in the top of the seventh. The Beacons stranded runners on third in the second, fifth, and sixth innings.

Wildcat starter Cy Fontenot got the win. He pitched five innings, allowed two runs on three hits, struck out three. Jayden Drake held the Beacons to one hit over the final two innings, got a save. Beacon starter Austin Wolfe got the loss; he pitched four innings, struck out seven, but allowed four runs on six hits. Wilson and Isaiah Hart had two hits for the Beacons. Louisiana Christian lost their second game of the day 26-2 to Georgia Gwinnett.

At Lewiston, ID. British Columbia 5, Embry-Riddle-Arizona 2. Sean Heppner pitched eight shutout innings, allowed three hits, walked one, struck out eleven, and threw 107 pitches.

The Thunderbirds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Mitchell Middlemiss and an RBI on a ground out by Kyle Anderson. They got the winning run in the second inning on an RBI single by Russell Young. They got a run in the fifth when Trent Lenihan scored when Middlemiss reached on an error. Middlemiss was a factor in another run when he hit a single in the sixth, and Aaron Marsh scored on a throwing error.

The shutout ended in the top of the ninth when Adam Khan took the ball from Heppner. The Eagles (of Prescott, AZ) loaded the bases with a single, a batter reaching on an error, and a walk. Luke Jepson hit an RBI single, and Khan was relieved by Evan Hoegler without recording an out. Hoegler struck out the first batter he faced, and got a fly out for the second out. The Eagles got one more run when Hoegler hit a batter, but a ground out ended the game.

Cole Altherr went the distance for the Eagles, allowed only two earned runs on eight hits, walked seven, struck out three, threw 154 pitches. Hoegler got a save. Young, Lenihan. and Middlemiss had two hits. Jepson finished 3-for-3 for the Eagles. recap

Arizona Christian 10, Oklahoma City 3. Andrew Ivy went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, and Ryan Eastham went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Firestorm. Four Firestorm pitchers combined to limit the Stars to seven hits; Eli Elliott got the win. recap

Lewis-Clark State 8, British Columbia 1. Vicarte Domingo got his second start of the season for the Thunderbirds, and held the Warriors to two runs on seven hits over the first seven innings, struck out five. However, in the eighth inning, they scored six runs on Ryan Heppner, who didn’t record an out, and one more on Tyson Kilbreath to put it away. The Thunderbirds scored a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Jonny McGill, and didn’t score again the rest of the way. They out-hit the Warriors 12-10, but left twelve runners on base. The Warriors got their first run on an RBI single by Brandon Cabrera in the second inning, and the winning run on a home run by Jake Gish in the bottom of the fourth. The fourth inning ended with Kaden Zarowny making a catch in shallow center field, then throwing a strike to Russell Young at the plate, who made the tag for an inning-ending double play. Shane Spencer pitched 7 1/3 innings for the Warriors, scattered ten hits, struck out two. Cameron Smith went the rest of the way, allowed two hits, struck out four. Gish, Cabrera, and Pu’ukani De Sa each had two hits for the Warriors. Aaron Marsh finished 3-for-5 with a double for the Thunderbirds. recap
