NWAC Baseball Championship – Day Three Recap

Lower Columbia and Spokane survive and advance. Tacoma defeats Linn-Benton in a winners bracket matchup.

Game 9 (loser out) – Lower Columbia 2, Edmonds 1 (11)

A scoreless game until the bottom of the 6th inning, Lower Columbia would break through first. Royce Vandine delivered an RBI single to put the Red Devils up 1-0. Edmonds didn’t get their first hit until the 8th inning when Camden Gillespie launched a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the 11th, Lower Columbia loaded the bases and was able to walk off with a 2-1 victory when a hit-by-pitch brought home the winning run.

Starter Jack DeDonato went 7.1 strong innings for Lower Columbia, allowing just the 1 run and striking out 6. Hunter Grasser went the final 3.2 innings for LCC, allowing no runs and earning the win. Sheldon Egger also pitched very well for Edmonds, giving up 1 unearned run over 6.2 innings.

Game 10 (loser out) – Spokane 3, Everett 2 (13)

Everett struck first in this one, scoring a run in the 1st inning when Carson Burns grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing Isaac Hoag to score. The Trojans added another run in the 4th on a Jake Lockwood RBI double to make it 2-0. Spokane finally got on the board in the 7th inning when Jaxson Davis hit a 2-run double to tie the game at 2-2. The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 13th inning when Reese Vassar came through with a walk-off RBI single, giving Spokane a 3-2 victory.

For Spokane, starter Joshua Tucker went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Josh Sterba earned the win in relief, tossing 6 scoreless innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 4. Tyler Alm picked up the save with a scoreless 13th inning.

Everett’s pitching was also strong. Landon Welter started and went 6.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. AJ Hendrickson and Blake Sandvik combined for 6.2 innings of relief, with Sandvik taking the loss despite allowing just 1 unearned run in 4 innings of work.

Game 11 – Tacoma 10, Linn-Benton 5

Linn-Benton got out to an early 3-0 lead in the 1st inning, scoring runs on a sac fly and two wild pitches. Tacoma answered with a big 4-run 4th inning, getting a 2-run single from Drew Johnson, an RBI single from Jeramiah Crain, and an RBI single from Logan Shepherd to take a 4-3 lead. Tacoma tacked on another run in the 5th on a Chase Cretti RBI triple. Linn-Benton cut the deficit to 5-4 with a run in the 7th on a Jordan Hockett RBI double.

The 8th inning was decisive for Tacoma, as they exploded for 5 runs, getting a 2-run single from Aden Dance, a 2-run double from Logan Shepherd, and a run scoring on a wild pitch to make it 10-4. Linn-Benton got one back in the 9th on an Aidan Dougherty solo home run, but it wasn’t enough as Tacoma held on for the 10-5 victory. Tyler Logan earned the win for Tacoma going 6 innings, allowing 3 runs and striking out 6.

With the win, the 3-0 Tacoma Titans are guaranteed a spot in the championship game on Monday.
