Western Oregon Duo Sweeps GNAC Baseball Weekly Honors

GNAC baseball highlighted Western Oregon University’s stars this week as freshman shortstop Zane Garvey and senior pitcher Jacob Memmott captured the conference’s weekly honors. The standout performances from both players were instrumental in the Wolves’ four-game sweep of Saint Martin’s, with Garvey’s .429 batting average and flawless defense complemented by Memmott’s complete game shutout that required just 92 pitches to secure the series-clinching victory.

Freshman Garvey Claims Player Honor

Zane Garvey, from Beaverton, Oregon, put together an outstanding performance during the Wolves’ four-game sweep of Saint Martin’s. The shortstop batted an impressive .429 (6-for-13) with two doubles while driving in four runs and scoring three of his own. Additionally, he showcased his defensive prowess by handling 18 chances flawlessly at shortstop, recording 15 assists without committing a single error.

The freshman standout made an impact throughout the series, contributing to scoring in three of the four contests. In the series opener on Saturday, Garvey went 3-for-4 with three RBI, helping propel the Wolves to victory. Furthermore, he closed out the weekend with another multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored in Sunday’s finale.

What’s particularly remarkable is Garvey’s recent offensive surge. Over his last 13 games, he’s batting an extraordinary .512 (21-for-41) with 10 RBI, 10 runs scored, four doubles, and a triple. As a result of this hot streak, Garvey now leads the Wolves in both batting average (.377) and on-base percentage (.506).

Memmott Delivers Complete Game Shutout

Meanwhile, senior right-hander Jacob Memmott delivered a masterful pitching performance to earn GNAC Pitcher of the Week honors. The Central Point, Oregon native threw a complete game shutout in Western Oregon’s 4-0 series-clinching victory over Saint Martin’s on Sunday.

Memmott was in complete control throughout his outing, scattering just four hits while striking out seven batters and issuing no walks. His efficiency was evident in his 92-pitch performance, during which he retired the final 12 batters in order to close out the game. Moreover, Memmott’s dominance limited the Saints’ offense, as only one runner managed to reach scoring position throughout the entire contest.

This performance represented Memmott’s best start of the 2025 campaign thus far. The shutout victory helped lower his season ERA to 4.97, as he starts to trend towards his 2024 form (3.90 ERA).

Western Oregon’s sweep of the weekly awards highlights the team’s impressive performance against Saint Martin’s, as the Wolves continue to build momentum in GNAC play. Both Garvey and Memmott will look to carry their stellar performances forward as Western Oregon heads to Nampa, ID to take on Northwest Nazarene.
