Cascade Collegiate Conference recap for March 24-26

Oregon Tech and British Columbia won series vs. C. of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State, Bushnell swept Eastern Oregon.

Oregon Tech won three of four vs. College of Idaho

The Hustlin’ Owls won the first game 12-7. They led the entire way, scoring two runs in the first inning, five runs in the third, then putting it way with five runs in the fourth. The winning run was a sacrifice fly by Matthew Ortiz, who finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Patrick Arman got the win, went seven innings, allowed four earned runs on eight hits, struck out five.

The Owls won the second game 15-11, in a game that was halted in the top of the sixth inning due to darkness. The Coyotes scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Owls answered with ten runs in the bottom of the first, and led the rest of the way. Korrey Siracusa went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored.

The Coyotes won the third game 16-11. This game was close until the top of the ninth inning, when the Coyotes scored four runs. The winning run was scored in the seventh; pinch-runner Ryan Blokker scored when Skylar Sadora reached on a fielder’s choice. Jonah Hultberg finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Coyotes, also drew two walks. Jake Denison hit a home run for the Coyotes. Nick Eliason, who pitched the final six innings, got the win. He allowed three runs on six hits, struck out 11.

The Owls scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the fourth game 7-6, and the series. Siracusa hit an RBI double, then Julien Jones hit a three-RBI double. Jones also hit a sacrifice fly earlier in the game. Landon Cheney got the win.

Bushnell swept Eastern Oregon.

The first game was 4-2. The Beacons had only four hits. The Mountaineers had an early 2-0 lead on home runs by Mario Landeros and Justin Duso, but the Beacons tied it on a home run by Cade Crist, and won it on a home run by Cayden Delozier. Ethan Sachs got the win, pitched eight innings, allowed two runs on four hits, struck out eight.

The second game was 10-0, mercy-ruled after eight innings. Crist hit two home runs, had five RBI. Jahshua Yacapin, Kai Keamo, and Blake Stavros combined for the four-hit shutout.

The third game was 10-1. The Mountaineers again had an early lead. The Beacons got the winning run in the third inning when Jordan Wilson scored on a ground out, but didn’t put it away until they scored five runs in the eighth. Wilson finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Alec Gums got the win, pitched three innings, allowed two hits, struck out four.

Bushnell’s pitching came up even bigger in the fourth game, a 3-0 win. Adam Sabatino got the win, pitched five innings, allowed both the Mountaineers’ hits, struck out four. Trevor Hammond pitched two hitless innings, and Trenton Hough and Colby Knutzen each pitched hitless innings. Jeff Fripp hit an RBI single in the first inning for the only run the Beacons needed. Ethan Stacy added a home run in the sixth inning.

British Columbia won three of four vs. Lewis-Clark State.

The Thunderbirds recovered big-time from their disaster at C. of Idaho the previous weekend. They won the first game 4-0, on an excellent start by Sean Heppner; seven innings pitched, three hits, ten strikeouts. Daniel Sereda pitched the final two innings to complete the shutout, allowed two hits, struck out three. The Thunderbirds only had five hits, but one of them was a two-run home run by Brandon Hupe. He also hit a sacrifice fly.

The Thunderbirds won another pitchers’ duel in the second game, 2-1 (11 innings). Carter Booth scored on an error in the top of the ninth for the Warriors to send it into extra innings. The winning run was scored by Hupe, also on an error. Each team had only five hits. Thunderbirds starter Ryan Beitel went eight innings, allowed three hits. Brendan Logan pitched the top of the eleventh and got the win, struck out two of the four batters he faced.

The third game was another close one, and the Warriors won 3-1. Decker Stedman pitched the first six innings for the Warriors, allowed no runs on two hits, struck out four, got the win. Zachary Ediger struck out two of the four batters he faced, but was also charged with the only Thunderbird run. Jantzen Lucas went the rest of the way, didn’t allow a hit, struck out three. The winning run came on a two-run home run by Dominic Signorelli.

The Thunderbirds won the fourth game and the series with yet another pitchers’ duel, 3-1. This time, it was Ryan Heppner and Daniel Orfaly who combined to hold the Warriors to six hits. Ryan Heppner pitched the first four innings, gave up the only run. Orfaly pitched the remaining five innings, allowed only two hits, struck out three, and got the win. David Draayers hit a two-RBI double for the winning run. Jonny McGill hit an RBI single for the insurance run.

Corban defeated Division III Pacific U. 7-4

This game was tied 4-4 after 5 ½ innings, but the Warriors won it with a two-RBI triple by Ryan Clay in the bottom of the sixth. He added an RBI single in the eighth. The Warriors used five pitchers; Alex Hakes got the win, pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings, struck out two of the five batters he faced.

    The third and fourth games of the British Columbia vs. Eastern Oregon series have been moved from Saturday to Sunday, and from La Grande to Pendleton. Starts at 11 AM.
