Both Saint Martin’s and Central Washington were supposed to start their seasons in California. Inclement weather canceled both of those series. Eastern Oregon didn’t have anything scheduled this week, and British Columbia wasn’t supposed to start their season until February 9. So, alternate plans were made; the Saints went to Eastern Oregon in La Grande for a three-game series, and the Wildcats and Thunderbirds played a double-header on Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, WA.
First game: Eastern Oregon 10, Saint Martin’s 0. Will Seslar and Tucker Zander held the Saints to two hits. Seslar pitched the first five innings, allowed one hit, struck out four, walked five, got the win. Zander pitched the final two innings, allowed the other hit. The Mountaineers got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first. It started with Chase Nett scoring on an error, and a run walked in. Easton Lasich then hit a two-RBI single, and the Mountaineers led 4-0. They added four runs in the fifth, three of them on a pinch-hit home run by Tommy Whiles. They completed the scoring with two runs in the sixth, including a home run by Trevor Baker. Lasich finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Second game: Saint Martin’s 7, Eastern Oregon 6. The Saints out-hit the Mountaineers 10-4, but the Mountaineers trailed by only 6-5 after six innings. The Saints got the winning run in the top of the seventh when pinch-runner Colin Bell came home on a double play. The Mountaineers made it a one-run game with an RBI single by Trevor Baker in the bottom of the eighth, but the Mountaineers didn’t get anyone beyond first base the rest of the way. The Saints pitchers who got it done were Colin Driscoll, Nikki Scott II, and Sam McCauley. Driscoll didn’t allow a hit or an earned run during the first four innings, struck out four. Scott pitched the next three innings, allowed two earned runs on three hits. McCauley went the rest of the way, allowed one run on one hit. Trevor McCorkle went 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Dylan McLaughlin went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. recap With the win yesterday, the Mountaineers won the series two games to one, and are 5-2 for the season.
First game: British Columbia 8, Central Washington 7. This game was close all the way, and wasn’t decided until the eighth inning. The Wildcats took a 7-5 lead with four runs in the top of the eighth, on a two-RBI double by Jake Felton and a two-RBI single by Jake Madson. However, the Thunderbirds answered with Jaden Lamothe scoring when Russell Young reached on an error. Aaron Marsh then hit a two-RBI single to win it. Sean Heppner pitched the first five innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits, and struck out ten of the 21 batters he faced. He was relieved by Ryan Heppner, who allowed one hit over two innings. Next on the mound was James Brock, who allowed four runs on three hits in an inning of work, but he got the win. Evan Hoegler allowed one hit and struck out two in the ninth inning, and got a save. Beau Kearsey got the loss. Marsh finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Kaden Zarowny hit a home run in his first game with the Thunderbirds. Ben Leid finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI for the Wildcats.
Second game: British Columbia 4, Central Washington 3. Another game that was close all the way, and also decided in the eighth inning. The Wildcats led 3-2 after six innings, on an RBI double by Max Bledy, a sacrifice bunt by Marcus Manzardo, and an RBI single by Austin Ohland. After that, they were shut down by Daniel Orfaly (fifth through seventh innings, one earned run on four hits, three strikeouts), and Vicarte Domingo (eighth and ninth innings, zero runs on two hits, two strikeouts). Kyle Anderson hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to tie it, and Jaden Lamothe scored the winning run on a throwing error.
Domingo got the win, and Drew Richardson got the loss. None of the Thunderbirds got more than one hit. Besides Anderson, Kellen Bourne and David Draayers got the RBI. Ohland finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
