Cascade Collegiate Conference recap for February 9

Oregon Tech gets their first two wins at the Cajun Collision in Louisiana, British Columbia got a quality win, Bushnell won a barn burner.

Oregon Tech 6, Georgetown College (KY) 2. Tyler Horner hit a three-RBI double in the fifth inning of a scoreless game to give the Hustlin’ Owls their first win of the season. They added two insurance runs in the sixth with a two-RBI double by Julien Jones, and an RBI single by Keanu Mizuta in the seventh. The Tigers were kept off the board until the sixth inning. Isaac Hill pitched the first four innings, allowed two hits, struck out five, got the win. Landon Cheney pitched the next two innings, allowed the two runs on three hits. Riley Cronin pitched the seventh inning, didn’t allow a hit, struck out two of the five batters he faced, walked two of them. Jones finished 2-for-2, and also got an assist for a perfect throw from right field to get an out at the plate. Mizuta and Patrick Barry both went 2-for-4. Chad Baker got the loss for the Tigers.

Oregon Tech 6, LSU-Alexandria 4. The Hustlin’ Owls got two runs on an RBI single by Julien Jones and a sacrifice fly by Ka’ala Tam in the first inning. They added four more in the second with a two-RBI single by Jones, an RBI single by Tyler Horner, and an RBI on a run walked in by Kyle Norton. They held on the rest of the way, with starter Cody Dubray going four innings, allowing one run on four hits. Tim Williams (transfer from Big Bend CC) went the rest of the way, allowed three runs on six hits. Jones finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Brandon Noel got the loss. recap

Bushnell 5, Simpson 1. The Beacons trailed 1-0 going into the ninth inning, and were held to one hit by Red Hawks starter Eric Winchester, who went seven innings, struck out six. Nathan Palacioz pitched a hitless eighth inning. Meanwhile, Beacons starter Ethan Sachs and reliever Trevor Hammond did an admirable job of keeping the Beacons in the game. Sachs went 5 1/3 innings, allowed the only Red Hawk run on four hits, struck out seven. Hammond pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowed two hits, struck out two (got the win).

So, the stage was set for the ninth inning. Jordan Wilson started it with a single, and Albert Jennings reached on an error. They were both replaced by pinch runners, and they moved to second and third on a passed ball. Cade Crist drew a walk to load the bases, and he was also replaced by a pinch runner. Kai Keamo, the pinch runner for Wilson, scored the tying run on a wild pitch. After a ground out, Kyle Kasperson hit a two-RBI double for the winning run. He was replaced on the base paths by yet another pinch runner, Jake Stoner, and he scored on a wild pitch. A walk, a single by Reece Carganilla, and a ground out later, pinch-hitter Caleb Richter hit a single to score the fifth run, but the inning ended with Carganilla being thrown out at third. Colby Knutzen came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth, and it was three up, three down.
Wilson was the only player in the game with two hits. Logan Boenker got the loss for the Red Hawks.

Simpson 3, Bushnell 2. The Red Hawks scored all of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and all of them were unearned. Dylan Leek stole home, and Alex Tolbert and Dominic Folks hit RBI singles. The Beacons opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Jordan Wilson in the fourth inning, and made it a one-run game when Isaiah Hart scored on a ground out in the seventh. However, they didn’t get a base runner the rest of the way. Red Hawks starter Jaydon Tomas got the win, pitched five innings, allowed one run on three hits, but it was Eddie Avalos who held the Beacons hitless over the final 2 2/3 innings. British Columbia 7, Hope International 3. The Thunderbirds led the #11-ranked Royals all the way, scoring a single run in every inning except the first and the sixth. They again used the combination of starter Sean Heppner and reliever Ryan Heppner. Sean pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed two runs (both of them home runs) on four hits, struck out five. Ryan pitched 2 2/3 innings, didn’t allow a hit or a walk, struck out five, got the win.
The Thunderbirds opened the scoring with a home run by Mitch Middlemiss in the second inning. Kaden Zarowny opened the third inning with a single, then scored on an error. Trent Lenihan scored on a bunt by Aidan Rose in the fourth inning, and Russell Young scored the winning run when Trent Lenihan went to first on a dropped third strike.
Vicarte Domingo pitched the final two innings, and there was some unwelcome excitement in the bottom of the ninth. The Royals started the inning with a walk and a single by Mario Tostado. An RBI single by Ryan Lamastra made the score 7-3, and still nobody out. However, Domingo struck out the next batter, then got outs on a line drive and a popup to preserve the win. Domingo’s numbers were two hits, two strikeouts, and one walk.

Lenihan finished 2-for-4 with a double. Middlemiss and Zarowny were both 2-for-5, and Middlemiss also hit a double. Trey Seeley got the loss for the Royals.

Embry-Riddle-Arizona 10, British Columbia 9. The Thunderbirds led 7-4 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Eagles scored six runs, including a two-RBI double by Jacob Aguirre and a two-RBI single by Drew Barragan to win it. The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Jaden Lamothe and a run walked in, and had the bases loaded with no outs, but Eagles reliever Noah Tschopp came up big, got a popup and two strikeouts to preserve the win. Mitch Middlemiss finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI and three runs scored. Trent Lenihan went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Roberto Garza-Nunez went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Eagles. Parker Cardacio got the win, and Kellen Bourne got the loss. recap

College of Idaho 6, Westcliff 2. The Coyotes out-hit the Warriors 14-6, and Nick Eliason held them to one hit over the first seven innings. Matthew Iwamizu hit a two-RBI single in the sixth inning for the winning run. He finished 3-for-4. Kris Kirkpatrick finished 4-for-4 with an RBI. Eddie Rios got the loss for the Warriors. recap

Jessup 17, Corban 6. Jessup (both teams are called the Warriors) started off with six runs in the first inning, and got the winning run in the fourth inning on the fifth home run of the season by Trey Furrey, who continues to destroy CCC pitching. Corban got two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Brady Majewski and a run scored on a ground out, but Jessup scored six in the bottom of the fifth, including yet another home run by Furrey and a three-run home run by Quinton Hall, to put it away. Brad Pellkofer finished 2-for-4 with a double for Corban. Matthew Den Hartog hit a home run. Anthony Perez got the win. Bryce Bridge, who gave up ten runs, got the loss.

Jessup 9, Corban 6. Corban led 4-1 after five innings, but Jessup scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a two-run home run by Chris Lopez and a three-run home run by Drew Andrews, to win it. Ryan Clay went 4-for-4 with a run scored for Corban. Nainoa Ka’ahanui went 2-for-3, batted in two of Corban’s runs. Xavier Madonado got the win, Gabriel Prater got the loss.

Eastern Oregon won a scrimmage at Division III Pacific U. 12-2. Tucker Zander pitched three hitless innings, struck out five.
