British Columbia got another win against #11 Hope International, but it took 14 innings to do it. The College of Idaho swept a double-header, and Bushnell got a series win.
Embry-Riddle-Arizona 6, British Columbia 4. This was similar to last night’s game, but nine innings instead of seven. The Eagles scored runs in the first and third innings off James Brock, who actually had a good outing; five innings, four hits, only one earned run, and four strikeouts. Kyle Yip hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, so the Thunderbirds trailed by only 2-1 when Brock was relieved by Adam Khan. Khan walked the first batter he faced, got a fly out and a double play. The Thunderbirds tied it 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Mitch Middlemiss reached on a error, and Aaron Marsh scored. However, the Eagles took the lead again in the top of the seventh with runs scored on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. They got the winning run in the top of the eighth on a passed ball, and the insurance run on an RBI single. The Thunderbirds answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth; Kaden Zarowny came home on a double play, Trent Lenihan hit a home run, and the Thunderbirds trailed 6-4. In the bottom of the ninth, however, the Eagles brought in Noah Tschopp, the same closer who shut down the Thunderbirds last night. The result was, he struck out the side, and game over.
Lenihan and Yip had identical numbers; 2-for-4 with a home run. Drew Berrigan finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Eagles. Jonah Montes got the win in relief, but the Eagles got a great start from Cole Altherr; six innings, one earned run on four hits. Khan got the loss.
British Columbia 9, Hope International 7 (14 innings). The Thunderbirds used their two best starters for the two games against the #11-ranked Royals, and the strategy sort of worked, with two wins against the Royals, but two losses to Embry-Riddle-Arizona. However, although starter Ryan Beitel went six innings, three runs on three hits, eight strikeouts, he was long gone by the time this one was decided. The Royals went up 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI double by J.J. Cruz. That lead held up until two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth, when Jaden Lamothe hit a two-RBI single to give the Thunderbirds a 4-3 lead.
That lead didn’t hold up. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-runner Mylan Jones scored on a ground out by Alex Moreno, and the game went into extra innings. The Thunderbirds got a three-run home run by Trent Lenihan in the top of the tenth, but that lead didn’t hold up, either. The Royals answered with a two-RBI double by Branden Chun-Ming, and the tying run was walked in, again with two out. However, a ground out ended the inning with the bases loaded, and the game continued.
Both teams got runners to second base in the eleventh inning. The Royals left a runner on second in the twelfth inning. Both teams left runners on second in the 13th inning. In the top of the 14th, Lenihan hit a home run for the winning run (with two out, of course), and Mitch Middlemiss hit an RBI double for the insurance run. In the bottom of the 14th, Oliver Duthie, who entered the game in the twelfth inning, hit the first batter he faced, then retired the next three batters to end it. The final out was Cruz striking out.
Duthie got the win; he allowed three hits, struck out three, didn’t walk a batter, but hit two of them. Gio Besio, who pitched the 14th inning, got the loss; he was the seventh pitcher for the Royals. Lamothe had quite a game, beyond the ninth-inning heroics; 5-for-7 with two RBI and a double. The Thunderbirds out-hit the Royals 18-11. The Royals were charged with five errors, but none of them resulted in runs.
Bushnell 11, Simpson 10. The Beacons trailed 10-2 after six innings, but they came up with nine runs in the top of the seventh to win it. Three of those runs came on a base-clearing double by Albert Jennings, and the winning run came on an RBI single by Brandon Reed. Jennings finished 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI. Cade Crist hit a home run. The Beacons used seven pitchers. Marques Brown got the win, pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowed no runs on two hits, struck out two. Nathan Palacioz got the loss. Logan Gomes hit two home runs for the Red Hawks. recap
College of Idaho 23, Westcliff 5. The Coyotes put this one away with ten runs in the bottom of the first inning, three of them on a home run by Alex McFarland-Smith. The winning run came from an RBI single by Matthew Iwamizu. Willy Shirts, who faced three batters in the bottom of the fifth, got the win. Kyle Douphner, the Warriors’ starter, got the loss, didn’t record an out. Chandler Stocking went 4-for-5 with a triple, three RBI, and four runs scored.
College of Idaho 5, Westcliff 1. The Coyotes again got the winning run in the first inning, on an RBI double by Jordan Kelly. The Warriors were shut out until the seventh and final inning. Starter Oliver Massie pitched two hitless innings. Nate Vidlak came on in the third inning, went the rest of the way, got the win. He allowed one run on four hits, struck out five, and walked two. Alex McFarland-Smith finished 2-for-3 with a triple. Chance Shipley got the loss. recap
Jessup 19, Corban 18. Corban (both teams are called the Warriors) scored nine runs in the top of the third inning, led by a three-run home run by Nainoa Ka’ahanui. They added another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Joshua Miyazawa, and led 10-8 at that point. Jessup tied it in the fifth on a two-run home run by Bryce Petrilla. Corban got two runs in the sixth, including a two-RBI double by Noah Owens. However, Jessup took the lead for good with six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Corban got within one run in the top of the ninth with a solo home run by Brad Pellkofer with two out, but the game ended with a ground ball to the pitcher. Miyazawa finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Jessup used seven pitchers. Xavier Maldonado got the win, Giovanni Cervantes got the loss.
Jessup 17, Corban 4. Jessup completed the four-game sweep. Corban actually led this 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. They got a home run by Ryan Clay in the top of the first inning, and a two-run home run by Brad Pellkofer in the fourth. Jessup took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the winning run came from an RBI single by Trey Furrey. The wheels came off for Corban with twelve runs in the fifth. Drew Andrews was responsible for six of them; two 3-run home runs in the same inning. Trevor Arntson got the win.
