Pacific Lutheran 10, Alfred State College 5 – Pacific Lutheran took an early lead and had to fend off a late rally from Alfred State to hang on for a 10-5 victory in a slugfest on Monday afternoon.
The Lutes got on the board quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI single by Aaron Barber and RBI triple from Rochne Beecham. They extended the lead to 5-1 after four innings, beginning with Beecham and Asa Reese drawing back-to-back walks to start the rally. Brody Phinney then ripped a double to left to score Beecham. Lukas Delisle followed with a single up the middle to plate Reese and make it 4-1 PLU. Carson Burke capped the three-run frame with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Phinney.
Pacific Lutheran then broke the game open with another big inning in the 5th. Ashton Barton and Beecham kick-started the rally with a double and walk respectively. Delisle then laced a two-run single to left to make it 7-1 PLU. Burke followed with a booming double to left-center, plating Delisle to extend the lead to 8-1.
Reliever Cole Becker took over from there, tossing two innings of solid relief to earn the victory for the Lutes. He allowed just one run on four hits while striking out two.
Alfred State did make things interesting with a 9th inning rally, scoring three runs but it was too little, too late for the Pioneers against PLU’s bullpen.
The offensive star for Pacific Lutheran was Burke, who went 2-for-3 with a double, 3 RBIs and a run scored from the cleanup spot. Delisle also drove in 3 runs thanks to his two hits.
