Cascade Collegiate Conference recap for March 8

Bushnell, British Columbia, and Lewis-Clark State swept double-headers, Oregon Tech and Warner Pacific split.

Bushnell 10, Corban 0 at Springfield, OR. Halted by the mercy rule after seven innings. Albert Jennings, Will Hudler, and Dylan Carson hit home runs. Carson also hit an RBI single, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, he drew a walk to score the game-ending run.

Max Chapman went the distance for the Beacons, allowed only two hits, struck out six. Ethan Stacy went 4-for-4 with an RBI, and Hudler went 3-for-4. Box score

Bushnell 6, Corban 3. C.J. Smith hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, and the Beacons got three runs in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded hit batter, a sacrifice fly by Reece Carganilla, and an RBI double by Will Hudler. Kai Keamo, Elijah Breault, and Tanner Won combined to keep the Warriors scoreless for the first six innings. Keamo and Won held the Warriors hitless as well. Breault got the win. However, Won hit a batter and walked two more to load the bases in the top of the seventh. He was relieved by Blake Stavros, who struck out the first batter he faced, then gave up a base-clearing triple by Joshua Miyazawa. Those were the Warriors’ only three runs of the game, and they were charged to Won. Stavros allowed only one hit the rest of the way.

Hudler finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Avery Williamson got the loss. Box score

The Beacons swept the four-game series.

British Columbia 6, College of Idaho 4 (10 innings) at Caldwell, ID. This game was intense down the stretch. The Thunderbirds led 4-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, on a two-RBI single by David Draayers, a sacrifice fly by Trent Lenihan, and an RBI triple by Lenihan. Will Anderson pitched the first six innings for the Thunderbirds, allowed two run on three hits. In the bottom of the eighth, the Coyotes loaded the bases with two outs, and Thunderbird reliever James Brock hit a batter to make the score 4-3. The next batter, Pete Bacon, worked the count to 3-2, then struck out on a pitch that would have brought in the tying run had it been called a ball. In the bottom of the ninth, Ben Gaff hit a single with one out, and moved to second on a ground out. Brock walked the next batter, and was relieved by Lucas Huynh. Huynh walked the next batter to load the bases. He then walked Chandler Stocking to tie the game 4-4. However, he sent the game into extra innings by striking out the next batter, pinch-hitter Trevor Watkins.

In the top of the tenth inning, the Thunderbirds got two baserunners on a walk and a hit batter. They scored on a double by Russell Young. Owen McConnell was brought in to pitch the bottom of the tenth, and two ground outs and a fly out ended the game.

Huynh got the win, despite recording only one out. Grant Jakobson got the loss. Young was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Gaff went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Coyotes. Box score

British Columbia 11, College of Idaho 1. Halted by the mercy rule after seven innings. Jonny McGill got it started with a two-run home run in the top of the first. Mitchell Middlemiss added a two-run home run in the top of the third, and the Coyotes scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly by Chandler Stocking. David Draayers hist a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning to give the Thunderbirds a 9-1 lead. Kellen Bourne reached on an error in the seventh inning with courtesy runner Kyle Anderson scoring the run to give the Thunderbirds the ten-run margin.

Ryan Heppner started for the Thunderbirds, and it was his best start of the season, as well as his first win. He went six innings, allowed one run on four hits, struck out four. Dawson Cummins got the loss. Middlemiss finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, and two RBI. Box score recap

The Thunderbirds lead the series three games to zero. They will play one more tomorrow.

Warner Pacific 7, Oregon Tech 4 at Portland. The Knights got all the runs they needed in the first inning. It started with bases-loaded walks drawn by Alex Nisbet and Trenten Lowe. Then Jarrod Seibel hit a grand slam home run. Mitchell Thoma-Britt hit a home run in the fourth inning to give the Knights a 7-1 lead. The Hustlin’ Owls got back in it with an RBI double by Matthew Ortiz in the fifth inning, followed by a sacrifice fly by Ortiz and an RBI single by Ka’ala Tam in the seventh inning. However, Mason Deverna held the Owls to one hit over the final two innings.

Knight starter Connor Hale got the win; he pitched six innings, allowed two runs on eight hits, struck out nine. Isaac Hill, who started and didn’t record an out, got the loss. Patrick Barry finished 3-for-4 with a double for the Owls. Box score

Oregon Tech 7, Warner Pacific 2. The Hustlin’ Owls got two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Julius King hit a home run in the bottom of the second for the Knights, but the Owls got runs on a sacrifice fly by Julien Jones, an RBI single by Matthew Ortiz, an RBI single by Logan Macy, and two more unearned runs. The Knights got the last run of the game when Dylan Barnes came home on a double play in the fourth inning. Only three of the Owls’ runs were earned.

Carson Glavich started for the Owls, pitched six innings, allowed two runs on five hits, struck out three. Riley Cronin went the rest of the way, retired all nine batters he faced, struck out three of them. (The box score gives the win to Cronin, which is probably a mistake.) Ortiz finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ka’ala Tam got two RBI without getting a hit; he was credited with those two first-inning runs. Kaden Hindman got the loss. Box score

The Owls won the series three games to one.

Lewis-Clark State 6, Eastern Oregon 4 at Lewiston, ID. The Warriors led 4-0 after three innings, led by a solo home run by Ike George. However, the Mountaineers got a home run by Parker Cumberland and two other runs, and tied it 4-4 in the top of the sixth with a home run by Greyson McDaniel. The Mountaineers stranded two baserunners in the seventh, and went three up three down in the eighth. The Warriors won it with a two-RBI triple by Jack Sheward in the bottom of the eighth.

Jackson Cloud pitched the final four innings for the Warriors, allowed one run on four hits, struck out five, got the win. Alex Farnsworth got the loss. George finished 3-for-4 with a home run and a double. Box score

Lewis-Clark State 11, Eastern Oregon 3. The Warriors led 7-0 after five innings, most of the runs coming from two-run and three-run home runs by Charlie Updegrave. The Mountaineers didn’t score until the eighth inning, with a run scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Alex Olague. The Warriors answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, including an RBI single by Updegrave.

Jadon Williamson pitched the first seven innings for the Warriors, allowed no runs on six hits, struck out 15, didn’t walk a batter, threw 107 pitches. He struck out the side in the second, third, and fourth innings. Trevor Baker went 4-for-5 with a double for the Mountaineers. Box score recap

The Warriors lead the series two games to zero. They will play two more tomorrow.
