Oregon responded quickly in the bottom half, with Justin Cassella homering and Anson Aroz scoring on a sacrifice fly to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead after one. The Pilots then exploded for 4 runs in the second inning, highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Jonas Salk after run-scoring hits from Evan Scavotto and Jake Holcroft, who became the Portland Pilots all-time career hits leader on the play.. Zach Toglia added a solo homer in the third to make it 6-2 Portland. Oregon closed within 6-5 in the fourth on a solo homer from Jacob Walsh and RBI single from Cassella. But the Pilots broke it open with 5 runs in the fifth, keyed by a 2-run single from Bean and a 2-run blast from Holcroft. Leading 11-5, Portland tacked on 3 more in the seventh, with Toglia’s 2-run double being the big blow. G1: Whitman 19, Vassar 8 – The Whitman Blues came out swinging in the first inning, scoring 6 runs off Vassar starter Danny Wellner to take a commanding early lead. AJ Romero, Nathan Wilson, and Jack Bickerton each had RBI singles in the frame. The Blues kept pouring it on, scoring in each of the next four innings to build a 17-3 lead. Bickerton and Beck Maguire both went deep with home runs, and Halen Otte had a monster game with a home run, double, and 4 RBIs. Nick Teng also provided some fireworks with a bases-clearing double in the third. While the Whitman offense was clicking, the pitching staff did its job limiting Vassar’s scoring chances. Cole Kreber earned the win, allowing just 1 run over 2 innings of relief. The Blues used six pitchers in the game to keep Vassar’s hitters off-balance. Vassar showed some life with 4 runs in the 9th inning, capped by Noah Stockman’s 3-run homer, but it was too little too late against Whitman’s onslaught. Jensen Bergman also had a strong game at the plate for the Brewers with 3 hits. But the day belonged to the Whitman bats, who pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of 5 hit batters and 15 walks issued by the Vassar pitching staff.
