British Columbia’s Oliver Duthie gets win at U-23 World Cup

British Columbia LHP Oliver Duthie was credited with the win for Great Britain in a 2-1 win over Chinese Taipei on September 14 at the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup at Shaoxing, China.

Duthie started, pitched five innings, allowed no runs on three hits, struck out three, walked two.

This was Duthie’s second start of the tournament. The first one was for an extra-innings 5-3 loss to China on September 6. Duthie pitched into the seventh inning, and the British led 2-0 when he was relieved. He was charged with one run on two hits, struck out ten, walked two. His ERA for the tournament was 0.62.

Duthie is a true international player. He was born and grew up in Dubai, and competed for the UAE in more than a few international tournaments. He came to British Columbia on a scholarship, and has played two seasons for the Thunderbirds. He was used as a reliever last season. He has played two seasons for the Brooks Bombers of the Western Canadian Baseball League, and was a starter during the 2024 season. Both his father and grandfather were talented amateur baseball players, and his father, Roger, is a sports management professional.

Duthie is the second Thunderbird to pitch for a British national team. The first one was Gary Tongue, who played for the Thunderbirds in 2001 and 2002.
